“I genuinely feel GameNative could replace handheld PCs like the Steam Deck” — Inside Android’s Fastest-Moving Gaming Project, GameNative (my article!) - Lemmy.World

Having spent the bulk of my handheld gaming time with the Steam Deck, it was a bit of a shock last year to discover that PC gaming isn’t just possible on Android phones and retro handhelds, it’s powering on in leaps and bounds. I’ve seen so many different games running beautifully, from older AAA titles like Tomb Raider and Prey (2017), all the way to more demanding ones like RDR2 and even Cyberpunk 2077 (no surprise that the last one is still an imperfect experience, as things stand…but it is possible!). GameNative lets you play all manner of PC games on Android from GOG, Epic, and Steam. I reached out to my friend Utkarsh, who is the lead developer of GameNative to ask if he wanted to share his story and let me interview him. His background in development and gaming through to how GameNative started and is built, all the way to what the future might bring for his program. This is an interview on what I think might be at least part of the future of handheld gaming, and I hope you find this interesting: https://gardinerbryant.com/i-genuinely-feel-gamenative-could-replace-handheld-pcs/ [https://gardinerbryant.com/i-genuinely-feel-gamenative-could-replace-handheld-pcs/]

From GameNative being just like Stadia (?) to "𝘍𝘶𝘤𝘬 𝘢𝘯𝘥𝘳𝘰𝘪𝘥, 𝘭𝘢𝘴𝘵 𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘐 𝘸𝘢𝘯𝘵 𝘪𝘴 𝘮𝘰𝘳𝘦 𝘭𝘰𝘤𝘬𝘦𝘥 𝘥𝘰𝘸𝘯 𝘥𝘦𝘷𝘪𝘤𝘦𝘴 𝘣𝘭𝘰𝘢𝘵𝘦𝘥 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘧𝘪𝘭𝘭𝘦𝘥 𝘸𝘪𝘵𝘩 𝘴𝘱𝘺𝘸𝘢𝘳𝘦."

From someone telling me my article's title is a "conflict of interest" (then refusing to reply telling me how it is), to the title being clickbait

Am I crazy, or is this insane?

@flwwhtrbt Social media as whole has really weird norms that I genuinely don’t understand.

So much vague-posting, expecting that their entire audience saw some other random post if they want to understand what their post actually means, silently deleting a misleading post after it’s already spread misinformation widely, etc.

@flwwhtrbt A lot of people are insane, just mean or trolls. Anonymous or not. Online or not. Unfortunately. I still get surprised from time to time by people who drop needlessly mean comments over basically nothing, with no obvious justification. It can be quite disheartening. I hope you keep doing what you're doing regardless though.

      Thanks 🙂

No danger of me stopping, but Lemmy (and here) are the two social media spaces I share on now. That's it. So seeing the bulk with all these weird takes? It just feels...I don't know, a bit sad or something

Nice to have people chime in here letting me know I'm not wrong about this though! I did worry it was a 'me' take

@flwwhtrbt I’m not surprised. My overall experience on Lemmy especially on the gaming communities has been hostile to say the least. I post any opinion I am immediately mocked or attacked. Some communities like Privacy and DadJokes can be nice. But overall I’ve greatly preferred my experiences on Mastodon. Overall just a more welcoming group here.

Someone else pointed out a good chunk of people on Lemmy got banned from Reddit.

That banning part is a 𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘺 good point, I'd never even think of that. But...you're right.

And me too! All my love for Mastodon, this place is by far my favorite social media, and always a place I feel I can be myself (even if it is rare that I post anything person on here)

          Thanks 🙂

@flwwhtrbt I kind of do understand that anti-Android sentiment coming up. But it seems pretty misplaced here.

It's not like you're the person trying to talk these people out of their Steam Decks and Linux systems.

Personally I quit Steam many years ago because I felt they were the ones trying to lock me in.

I guess if we don't want to be locked to anything we should always be glad to have more than one system or platform or software to choose from.

            Kids being imbeciles...

Agreed on the Steam front! My library and focus is GOG and a little ZOOM (any that appeal to me, like Abe's Adyssey and so on!)

The Steam defenders online though? Wow, strongly opinionated!

              Thanks 🙂

I believe the hot topic was the sentence about GameNative replacing the PC gaming, because that means that Android will, and a lot of people are fearful about that, me included as I don't want to end up inside another walled garden.

But reading the comments seems like that people went too far.

The Stadia one didn't even understood what you worte about imho.

@flwwhtrbt I do have a lot of empathy for people taking a sceptical and even negative or pessimistic view on products.

For someone like that it might be irritating to read that pretty friendly tone of your interviews and reviews. But everyone should - if we want to be civilised and mature - understand that it's a *tone*. One possible tone amongst others.

I do enjoy following that content because it's a great overview of what's out there in terms of gear.

It seems to be a matter of sanity.

@flwwhtrbt @gardiner_bryant unfortunately, Lemmy is only really used by super tech niche nerds and so you get the wildest attitudes

I don't typically get frustrated, but the comments on #Lemmy when I shared my last interview with GameNative were just...maybe a bridge too far

@flwwhtrbt I have also found Lemmy to be a toxic shithole and stay away. I've ended up muting most of the instances here on Mastodon cause I just don't have time for their vitriol and whining.

I have also found people in general are just crybabies. They want titles that give you everything without having to click, even though those obviously won't perform well, and any time you have a take they don't like you're a paid shill.

                            The internet is cancer sometimes.
