I haven't set up a new code project in ages, but now I am doing so, and GitHub isn't anymore even a remotely within the options I'm considering.

Given the constant corporation driven enshittification, the only viable options seems to be self host. And while I'm at it, I think I'll ditch git as well, and go with https://fossil-scm.org/ , a SCM developed and used by the sqlite team.

If you want a forge-like experience, Codeberg is an European open-source alternative (running Forgejo): https://codeberg.org/They also have the interesting option of becoming a member which gives you voting rights regarding how the site is run.
Also it's worth remembering that git doesn't require these forges at all.

Fossil has all the forge capability baked in! But I'm actually now hosting a private repo, so the "visibility" of a project won't be an issue. Not that anyone was ever interested in my public repos anyways.
I think fossil suites my needs better than git anyways.

I was just about to continue that of course, if one is looking to get away from git, that's a somewhat different story
For me there are two tools that you'd have to pry away from my dead hands: vi(m) and git.
