Now what the fresh fuck is this, then?

@bryan @jschauma this one links to a URL in the form of https[://]recaptcha[.]net/qr/xxxxxxxx where xxxxxxxx is an 8-character string of letters & numbers
if you hit the root of the FQDN you get a 404 but if you hit https[://]recaptcha[.]net/qr/ you get redirected to https://support.google.com/recaptcha/answer/16609652 which says that it’s part of “Mobile verification for Google Cloud Fraud Defense” and is “an experimental challenge type in Preview” (screenshot attached)
it then goes on to suggest that you should download the Google reCAPTCHA
app to be able to complete the CAPTCHA (lol nope
️ 🤪) and undoubtedly send Google a crap-tonne more info about you & your device presumably this is because most people are accessing the challenge page on the mobile device that would be required to point its camera at its own screen – as (quite rightly) mobile browsers haven’t (yet) enabled the ability to blithely scan any old QR code displayed on a web page (but I expect this “feature” will be added soon enough to at least some mobile browsers

@zverik @bryan @jschauma yeah I’ve seen that before – it displays correctly in the web page but when a full page screenshot is taken it gets munged
my assumption is that it’s a unicode char that isn’t supported by whatever tool does the rendering of the full page for the full page screenshot pipeline on iOS ¯_(ツ)_/¯
you can see that a regular screenshot that only takes the visible screen doesn’t have the same problem

@jschauma I think the reason was that AI crawlers and bots currently have trouble reading QR codes. Which is weird because the whole point of QR codes is that they are machine readable

@jschauma in addition to all the other obvious problems with this, have they even considered accessibility at all?

@jschauma
The simple solution?Bye, no interest on any web content which require this.
No need to agree at all. -
@jschauma We all know that training people to scan random QR codes will not lead to anything bad ever happening!
@drahardja @jschauma oh don't worry you just need to use Chrome which now has the 4GB AI model that will maybe block a page if it thinks it's phishing and not a real Google ReCaptcha

@401matthall @zetabeta @jschauma
I expect yt-dlp will get an update in a couple of days that makes it work again, then NewPipe will follow a week later.Youtube hasn't worked in my browser for a long time, and I suspect it's some setting I changed, I just haven't been able to figure out which one. But a couple of days ago, it changed from showing a black video to telling me to log in.

Now this is some bullshit.
Today: Don't have an "approved" phone? Too bad for you.
