’Denmark Switches.’ A national campaign to collectively move off Big Tech. March 20th is Big Switch Day. I’ve named my goal now. I’m already almost deMicrosofted, except for my photo archive. I moved to Libre & Tuta mail and have been purging photos as I await the release of Tuta drive. Now I’m committing myself to just get the photos off OneDrive and on to my computer, that I own, in my house, by March 20th. Then I’ll delete Microsoft. Then I’ll boast about it on the Fediverse.

@CiaraNi I am inspired! I moved to Libre a few months ago & set up a Tuta account. I still have photos & calendar on iCloud though. It is a process

@CiaraNi Just a suggestion, which of course may not fit your needs.
Consider if you could put your music, video, and data onto a home NAS, and securely stream it within the house but also outside the house.
No need for any cloud drive, and little need for a streaming service. Audio streaming already starves musicians, buy and rip CDs instead. Video streaming is enshittifying with less for more. No data for water-hoarding data centres.

@BashStKid @CiaraNi I mean, yeah, but I've been wanting a NAS for the last 5 years because they're so *cute* (and also useful) but it's really hard to justify the expense.

@irgndsondepp Thanks! I *think* I can figure that out.

You don't see a lot of 34 character long domain names btw. Good choice 🙂

@CiaraNi If you need a cloud thing to replace OneDrive, my experience with NextCloud is really good 👍 I started with a free account via thegood.cloud & have recently upgraded to a paid one 😁

(I'm not using it for auto-syncing pictures from my phone but I'm told i can do it natively)

@jwcph Oh that is really good to know. Mange tak. I couldn't find an entry point for NextCloud as a Just Make It Work non-tech end user. Great to have a provider name - thanks. I will look into a free trial account and take it from there. (That's how I moved to Tuta - the free account was so good and simple that I subscribed almost immediately.) Tak for hjælpen.

@leanderlindahl @metteh Det lyder lovende. Hvis man kan slukke for AI via én knap, så er det allerede bedre end Big Tech-udgavene.

@Orewoet Sorry, no, I haven't used it as a shared calendar. Maybe someone else here in the Fediverse has - I'd be interested to hear myself.

I use it, and I don't think it is possible to share it in the "normal" way. Maybe if all use Tuta? Correct me if I'm wrong @Tutanota

@CiaraNi I am copying all of my 3Tb of pics from OneDrive to external SSDs...It turns out, download speeds are either capped or crippled as the regular speeds are 2-5Mb. But I have optical 1Gb link...Took me 3 days to download 400Gb. Still in progress

@mkj @Flatus @andresimous @sebastian I am moving my photos off OneDrive on to my computer and taking a back-up to my new external back-up drive. It's helped me weed the archive, making me think more about what I keep. I use a folder and file structure. Not sure if it's just me (perhaps a GenX thing?) but I can keep track through file names, photo dates and folder tree structures, no problem. I'd struggle more to find individual images from a flat structure grouped through links to albums.

@BashStKid Thanks for the tips. I don't know what a NAS is, so I am probably not the right one for that. I don't audio stream anything. I listen to CDs and the radio. And I never watch TV or films, so no alternative to streaming needed there either. Only now that you mention this do I realise that my analogue (/dull/old-fashioned) habits must make it easier for me to make digital changes than others. I have fewer things to consider. I'm lucky there.

@CiaraNi I perceive that the desire for (digital) independence is growing in #Europe – and I believe that this is a positive development – for Europe and for each individual!

With the current madman in the WH, it would be foolish for #Europe not to insist on digital independence.

Tak for opbakningen!
