      @neil

      What about email?

      I use Mutt, with vim as the editor.

        @freshstart I do use Gnu IMP, but unsurprisingly I don't refer to it by the offensive ableist name 🙂

          Them: What do you use to write documents?

          Me: I use vim. I write in Markdown, then convert it. (typst + pandoc)

          Them: What about presentations?

          @neil I'm glad I'm not the only one. My VS Code-wielding brothers-in-LLM are looking funny at me when I compile and debug binaries in vim 😛

                      @roadskater Markdown has only been around for 22ish years, so give it some time to settle down, I guess. No point rushing to adopt such things.

                            @neil Every time I've tried to install pandoc I've got into some sort of dependency hell. I'm writing a book, so I guess it will soon be time to try again.

                                Dependencies are an absolute pain with Pandoc. If you can get WeasyPrint installed as well, KT makes the formatting much easier.

Marvellous! In that spirit, here's how I used the venerable pandoc to convert my MSc dissertation from .md into a variety of more readable formats. Prep I've no idea what you already have installed on your system but, at a minimum, you…

                                  @ppulfer @neil you probably have to reboot the computer or something. Emacs is simple, C-x C-c, followed by 'y' if confirm-kill-emacs is set.

                                      @roadskater Markdown has only been around for 22ish years, so give it some time to settle down, I guess. No point rushing to adopt such things.

                                      @neil I did have some experience with runoff as a "markup" language on a DEC RSTS/E system about 1980. I may have been accused by a high school teacher with cheating because all my classmates had to use typewriters, or OMG, write the damn paper in longhand.

                                      How? I had access to the school district's computer center and its daisy -wheel printers.

                                        @neil Every time I've tried to install pandoc I've got into some sort of dependency hell. I'm writing a book, so I guess it will soon be time to try again.

                                        @ColinTheMathmo @neil I've used a docker container in the past to avoid having to pull in the full latex suite and pollute my system too much
