@nrmacdonald @saltmyhash Accessing a file share using MacOS leaves a .DS_Store file behind in every visited folder. You won’t see them in MacOS by default, since it starts with a dot.

I think that file stores the view preferences, icon positions, etc for that particular folder.

That info was previously stored in something called a "resource fork", which was a uniquely Apple abomination at filesystem level.

For that matter extended attributes aren't all that different.
