I do feel slightly sorry for anyone on Fedi who actually wants to follow the big game in the States (it's like the FA Cup Final for American Football, right?) because the hashtag is utterly fucked π

@losttourist Ha! They've messed up our Hallowe'en. Let's "join in" their #SuperbOwl.
Payback time.@aroundthehills I must have missed that. What did the American Football people do at Halloween?

@losttourist
I meant the USA-ians in general but, now you mention it, apparently an American Football is a suitable Hallowe'en costume.

@aroundthehills OK but that's not exactly trashing Halloween for everyone else, is it?
I honestly struggle to understand the glee with which some people here seem to be deliberately stomping all over the genuine passions & happiness of other people here.

@losttourist But they HAVE trashed so much of so many things because they are the world's dominant culture.
I've seen some of the owl hashtags and enjoyed some of them but I hadn't suspected that people were doing it to deliberately spoil genuine American Football fans' enjoyment. If that's the case, that's not nice.

@aroundthehills It has to be deliberate, there is literally only one day a year when people post pictures of owls under that hashtag, and it's the day that sports fans would like to watch a sport that uses the same hashtag.

@losttourist Hopefully there's an alternative hashtag, say with the year date, that isn't hijacked by Owls.

@losttourist If everyone used camel case it would be fine!

@losttourist @aroundthehills I have some sympathy with this. Perhaps we can compromise and start tagging pictures of terrible haircuts with #SuperBowl to annoy both the gridiron fans and the ornithologists.

USian football culture is ludicrously dominant. Never mind its capture of public money, this month it has overtaken what shouldβve been news sections of my city paper; relit the skyline; pretended that advertising is news. I am grateful for the birders who dilute it a little.

@DrHyde @losttourist @aroundthehills I think I can get with this one #SuperBowl

@clew @aroundthehills But my point is that here Howeve Mastodon/Fediverse, it's not a dilution. It's a domination.
Sports fans are a minority here, American sports fans even more so, and I am pretty damn sure that if not a single owl post was made, your feed still wouldn't be flooded with posts about the football game.
And even if it WAS the case, well that's why there are filters.
However if you do want to follow news about the game, then the obvious hashtag is completely unfollowable, because the ratio of signal to noise (or football to owls, if you like) is completely one-sided.

@foxbasealpha Argh stop it you'll trigger one of my other rants, which is that filters here should bloody well be case-sensitive.
I would dearly love to block all posts about one particular American agency without also ending up blocking significant chunks of the winter olympics.
