When I talk about reality and truth getting fundamentally corrupted, it goes beyond how you retouch your photo and it goes beyond how much spam you get.

@mttaggart Epistemic collapse is terrifying and I believe this is how it happens on a large scale.
@theorangetheme @mttaggart The great filter.

When I talk about reality and truth getting fundamentally corrupted, it goes beyond how you retouch your photo and it goes beyond how much spam you get. This is the kind of attack against society itself that is now trivial to execute.
@mttaggart Let's go back to handwritten submissions only. The cost of hardware to mimic it should add a helpful physical barrier against AI-driven forgeries. All the mail entailed might also help to save the world's ailing public postal systems.

@mttaggart What's worse is it isn't the first time this happened

@sitcom_nemesis Shame it's never a flood of writing in support of climate legislation

@mttaggart I get the impression that climate legislation supporters actually care about facts

@sitcom_nemesis And probably don't want to use AI unethically.

@libroraptor @mttaggart seriously. The whole problem stems from lazy administrators who think they can just put up a web poll and see which way the wind blows.

@mttaggart
Oh my god, this is so bad. This rule would have been so good. It's too bad initiatives like this are being boycotted by the forces behind AI. The Trump administration is probably very pleased. I wouldn't put it past them if they were behind it. -

@mttaggart AI is the Pollution Generator 9000 and there are people who decide "yes, I want to use the Pollution Generator 9000 to cause climate change even harder"

@mttaggart but they were impersonating real people with this, is this not a crime?

What you're describing is the concept of the erosion of shared reality in the age of generative AI.
Your message refers to the idea that the current threat is no longer limited to "superficial" problems like spam or basic photo editing, but has become a systemic challenge to the functioning of society. -

@mttaggart so close to actually responding properly...
"The flood of emails raised suspicions internally at the AQMD. The agency's cybersecurity team reached out to a small subset of people to confirm that they had submitted comments, or had authorized another party to send an email on their behalf. Only five responded. Two confirmed they had sent a message, while three others said they had no knowledge of the letters.
In a statement, air district spokeswoman Nahal Mogharabi confirmed the volume of comments was unusual and the agency was concerned about their authenticity, but said they did not receive enough responses to their inquiry to draw a definitive conclusion."
