so it's impossible to find affordable SSDs anymore huhcool cool cool cool cool

@nileane honestly if you don’t intend on carrying it around much it’s probably a good trade off.
@eramdam yeah it will just be stashed under my desk. Currently my Time Machine is on an old 2TB Samsung T5

should I just get a decent HDD?
I need 4TB to increase my Time Machine capacity, and 4TB SSDs currently cost half a house each, so yea@nileane I just bought myself two 5TB 2.5" disks. Their power consumption is significantly lower than 3.5", so they run fine with just USB power. Obviously not as fast as a bigger HDD, let alone SSD, but for backup imho that isn't a major concern.

@nileane then yeah just get a decent portable HDD and it should be fine tbh.
(Or delete some old backups

cool cool cool cool cool@nileane SSD's *and* mechanicals have gone up

)@eramdam I've been offloading a bunch of stuff off of iCloud and onto my new 2TB Samsung T7 that I keep mounted to my MacBook, and I'd like to keep including that SSD in Time Machine, so I simply need more capacity for Time Machine

@keir HDDs are still much cheaper tho

@nileane fair haha

@nileane true true!

@lsmith ah, thanks!
that's good to know -
@lsmith ah, thanks!
that's good to know@nileane BTW I am in the process of replacing my 3.5" RAID 5 Synology NAS.
New NAS will be a Raspberry Pi 4, with one 5TB drive for backup and another 2TB 2.5" drive for time-maschine. Cheaper, energy efficient, and backup is physically separated (bedroom vs. cellar).
Other 5 TB drive I will connect to my laptop now and then (especially if I work with larger video files). I will then likely use CarbonCopyCloner to automatically sync any files from that drive to the one attached to the NAS.

I need 4TB to increase my Time Machine capacity, and 4TB SSDs currently cost half a house each, so yea@nileane I'm very glad I switched to SSDs for time machine in 2024 -my time machine drive was constantly grinding and active even when it was supposedly idle!
But yeah - yikes SSD prices are nuts now. I got a 8TB samsung sata drive on ebay in summer 2024 for ~400 (which seemed like a lot at the time!) Same drive now new is $1200?! 🫠
