My mother used to touch clothing to her closed lips to test for dampness. It's something I do too now.
It doesn't help everyone but it might help some.

@exlibrarykris It's the strangest thing, all the laundry, all the time, all our life, and yet that 'is it a bit damp or is it a bit cold?' doubt always remains.

@canyakker It strikes me as strange that we never develop the skill. All the years, all the laundry, and yet still always that final phase of 'damp or cold' doubt.

@CiaraNi I have tried a moisture meter (intended for brickwork or wood) on laundry ... and it wasn't really useful, things wet straight out the washing machine, and things on the dryer that might have been just cold or slightly damp measured the same ...
Perhaps the solution is to know the exact dry weight of every single item, and see how much over that it weighs now ?? -
