Every single person who's ever claimed to beat Myst is lying, so that others would think they're smart. The game is actually unbeatable and he's about to blow open the whole thing."
"what we have learned is that you can't lead a horse to water" – the chatters, after trying every way to coach him through the puzzle they could collectively think of without bluntly telling him the solution

FUCK THE MUSIC PUZZLE.
Oh and the super dim red light for the side door in the tunnel thing. Completely invisible on certain monitors.
@rk yeah I see what you mean because I couldn't really see it on the TV the stream is being broadcast to. I guess it was clearer on CRTs?

I played it on a cheap CRT in 199x and that red light was 100% not visible.
Apparently in later revisions they made it considerably brighter.

@rk @0xabad1dea I've only played myst on a emulated black-and-white classic Macintosh. So now I have concerns.

You might be thinking of the spiritual predecessor of Myst, called The Manhole. Made by the same folks, all 1bit graphics on the original Mac.

@0xabad1dea I’ve recently seen a streamer play the 2020 Myst remake right after finishing the original version, and he still got stuck on a puzzle because he got lucky on his first playthru. You really can’t escape it.

@0xabad1dea it turns out Myst is unbeatable. For him.

@rk @0xabad1dea Oh, so it wasn't just me? At the time I thought my eyes were simply too colorblind to pick out the teeny tiny red dot that must have been glaringly obvious to everybody else!

@0xabad1dea I beat Myst because my version had a built-in hint system.
And it was still a bit on the annoying side, because the player had to go through the long tram maze twice. Some of the interfaces were a bit slow, needing a long time to scroll to the right position. Plenty of black-box style puzzles too, having to travel between two points to see the result.
The game can be completed in one minute, using a method similar to Alpine Encounter.
