      @mjg59 yes, basically what fails now is usually the cheap power supply they insert into LED bulbs to convert whatever power you got into led-usable power.

      Also, blue led inventor(s) got a well deserved noble prize.

        @palin @mjg59 From my personal teardowns, it’s about 30/70 the regulator or one of the LED modules has failed (which tanks the whole thing as they’re in series).

          @mjg59 We are the generation whose parents were always telling us to tun off the lights when we left a room to reduce the electricity bill - leaving the lights on was a significant cost. So it's fairly surreal to simply not care any more.

            @TomF @mjg59

            There was a weird period in the middle when cheap CFLs were common. These lasted effectively forever if left on, but had a limited number of starts. If you turned them off every time you left the room, they burned out quite quickly. Bathrooms were the worst, they often wouldn’t last a year there.

              @bytex64 @palin @mjg59 yes they are often driven too hard and one of the LEDs fails taking out the whole chain.

              Or, as you say a cheap power supply giving up.

              Terrible shame, and extra few pennies would make a huge difference.
