@skinnylatte this has happened to me, before I realised about my joint/mobility problems and asthma and needing a slow pace. I probably wasn't in danger, but I was Scared, the "my group abandoned me and I'm gonna die alone now" instinctual anxiety kicked in, which made me less rational, panic was probably the biggest risk to me in the place I was. I am horrified at the situations and places some of these people have been left in.

@skinnylatte I doubt very much it’s anything new. Just the media giving it attention for a few minutes.

@skinnylatte I think essential disconnect here is between people who do activities to *do that activity* and people who do activities as an excuse to hang out.
Like, I've seen all kinds of groups split on the trail because the more in-shape people with longer legs outpace everyone else, and I personally have to work to not be that guy.

something is really wrong with those guys if they decide to leave their partner@bweller there was an Austrian man in court last month for leaving his partner behind. She died. In court it was revealed it wasn’t the first woman he did it to

@Colman @skinnylatte yeah this is classic "i identify as outdoor sport" man behavior. katie burrell has been occasionally doing comedy bits about stuff adjacent to this for years now. if they don't abandon you on the trail they'll eventually break up with you because you don't match the new skis, bike, cooler, truck, or trail dog they bought and have decided will be their new identity.

The woman in the Austrian court case mentioned in the Guardian article didn't walk some trail, the couple attempted to summit Austria's highest mountain in winter. We're talking about a 3789 m mountain (12 461 feet).
And she was very fit in general (just not on this day because she had an infection).
So that was not a case of disconnect between people who are into an activity and people who are not.
