    #Maryland Is First to Ban #AI #Grocery #PriceGauging

    A #state #law that goes into effect in October prohibits grocery stores & third-party delivery services from using consumer data to boost #prices.

    The practice — supported by #ArtificialIntelligence & known as #DynamicPricing or #SurveillancePricing — can lead to 2 consumers paying different amounts for the same item from the same retailer, at roughly the same time.

    @Nonilex
    Yeah... today, some Super Markets electronically raise price of ice cream on hot days -- while U'r shopping in the store!
    Next, they'll increase flea powder if a sales clerk sees a customer scratching their head❗

      If a store knows, for example, that one of those customers lives in a wealthier neighborhood, it can charge that person a higher price.

      The bill enforcing the ban, the Protection From #PredatoryPricing Act, goes into effect on Oct 1. Merchants face fines of $10k for running afoul of the #law, & penalties of $25k for repeat offenses.

      Or even worse, be used in a discriminatory way to discourage certain groups from shopping in the store, say by raising prices on Black, or Latino, or Asian customers.

        @Nonilex To someone like Amazon, those fines are pocket change compared to what the rigged or conf gets them. They should have set find based on revenues. 😞

            What's the bet that the US supreme court finds that corporate price gouging is protected by the constitution somehow..

              @Nonilex before we get too gung-ho about this ban I think it's worth reading @pluralistic 's take on it: TLDR - it's been nobbled by the lobbyists.

                @Nonilex Maryland did not, in fact, ban surveillance pricing. It just faked that it did.

                  @Nonilex in #egypt about 25 years ago, it was illegal to sell same product with two different prices at the same day
                  I believe the taxes would then be calculated based on the higher price. In germany, price changes in certain sectors (eg transportation) must be announced 3 months in advance...etc. there are practical and legal ways to prevent predatory pricing.

                        Let’s just be straight about it & tax the rich rather than disguising it & accidentally taxing the poor who share a zip code with a wealthy neighborhood.
