Our bins don't really have any designated place to go. They are put on the street or sidewalk which is horrible. The city is trying to change this by making some parking spots into pick up areas but it means that we needed a truck that could lift a dumpster from the side.
These existed for single bins, but not full dumpsters. So we have our own new trucks now and they are very cool.

I’ve been wondering for a little while if motorised wheely bins could be a real thing. Once a week, a truck blocks the road and slowly empties them all. But what if each one had motorised wheels, a battery, and a little bit of electronics, so once a week at, say 2am, they could all take drive themselves to a centralised collecting area. The batteries could be swapped out if needed and recharged, and then they’d be sent home.
It doesn’t matter if it takes them an hour or so to get there and in smallish convoys they’d be easy to spot and overtake. If they go at a bit over walking speed, they’re no danger to people crossing the road, and at 2am they don’t need to avoid too much traffic. If you don’t want people to have to empty them overnight, just send out a clean replacement rather than sending it back: people don’t need to have the same bin every week and it’s fine to send the ones from Monday’ collection area back to Tuesday’s area the next night after they’ve been emptied, charged, and cleaned.
Probably wouldn’t work somewhere as dense as NYC, since they’d need to be able to reach the road, but might even work there if you let them out in the evening and they trundle away as soon as traffic density drops low enough.

@baishen @futurebird @billiglarper Everything Huang said in this interview is a giant steaming pile of horseshit.
@tsturm @futurebird @billiglarper Hence why it matches the last paragraph. :-)
-
@futurebird @baishen @billiglarper Back in the 1980s, university systems allocated mainframe computing resources with various token systems. Georgia called them bananas.
BTW, that system gave way to PCs, which were nowhere near as powerful as the mainframes, but which didn't need to be managed with micro payments. I suspect generative AI token services will go the same way.
@clayfoot @futurebird @baishen @billiglarper Agreed. And far faster than the data center payoffs.

I just listened to someone complaining about how "the garbage union" has schemed so that there are always two people operating NYC garbage trucks to "waste my tax dollars" and I guess making too many wealthy sanitation workers... oh no the horror.
I like that there are two people on each truck. It's more efficient and safer. But, even if it was somehow a waste I promise you that's not who is wasting your money bud.
@futurebird kinda wild to hear about, here in NI it's at least three, a driver and two guys doing the bins.
...and the number one safety issue for them is other traffic, which has gotta be 5 times worse in NYC -

...and the number one safety issue for them is other traffic, which has gotta be 5 times worse in NYCIf the driver needs to leave the cab in NYC you need to lock it or someone will get in and drive the truck away... not to steal it but just because when you have this many people some of them are... well they just do things. Anything a person might do WILL happen. Anything.

@adhdeanasl @futurebird @billiglarper It's more about propping up the AI bubble and convincing people to keep dumping money into it.
@baishen The same way banks did with variable rate mortgages right up until 2008. @futurebird @billiglarper

@futurebird @billiglarper That last paragraph goes perfectly with this. :-D
Jensen Huang says he would be 'deeply alarmed' if his $500,000 engineer did not consume at least $250,000 of tokens
"If that $500,000 engineer did not consume at least $250,000 worth of tokens, I am going to be deeply alarmed," says Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang.

If the company sees that as part of payroll - then you can guarantee that governments will add that to taxes...
So not a win for the employee.

@futurebird @baishen @billiglarper given how they burn up GPUs they are more like single use plastic

@JohnJBurnsIII @futurebird @billiglarper It's never been a win for the employee. It's all about forcing AI adoption to prop up the bubble for as long as they can.

@futurebird My favorite part is the little “don’t stand so close to me” arm that comes down.
And then …

@futurebird I don't think it would be possible in my neighborhood for one guy to maneuver the truck through all the tiny streets and reverse it down all the dead ends and also hop out every few yards to pick up a curbside garbage can and throw the trash into the truck. They would hit all our cars and/or drop dead of exertion.

"Essential workers" really showed everyone WHO makes everything possible day to day.
@Illuminatus @futurebird @baishen But we collectively seem to have forgotten all of that now.

@futurebird how the fuck can you operate a refuse truck with any fewer than two people?
-
@baishen @futurebird I mean, did anybody pay attention to who were the critical workers six years ago? I believe that, contrary to what it may seem, yes, most people did, and that broke the brains of techbros and plutocrats, because their fucking charade about how they deserve to be overpaid fucks was there for everybody to see.
@Illuminatus @baishen @futurebird
I felt at the time that it was the jobs that were noticed more than the people. The people were scared and forced in to work, died at greater rates and aren't treated any better today than they were in 2019. -
It was the comment section on a video where people geek out about garbage trucks. (yes this is how I spend my free time)
I was shocked at the passion this dude had for making a two person job into a one person job.
And yes, that would save money, but we all know it'd also make the results worse. It's corner cutting on something that I think is valuable and important. It never occurred to me that there would be people who look at guys with good jobs doing real work and just hate.
@futurebird @photovotary Apropos of nothing, I lived next to a retired santitation worker. He would wait in front of his house on garbage day, walk by the truck for a few houses, chat a little with the workers — they’d even let him put a bin into the claw.

@futurebird @ehproque
We have some trucks that have one guy driving with a robotic arm to pickup the trash. They're cool but not faster than the trucks with two guys on the back grabbing bins from both sides of the street at once. I expect their maintenance and down time is more, though. It's possible we have fewer people here interested in the work and more distance to cover so maybe it's worth it. And our streets are way less crowded so one truck looping around multiple times is less ...in my area WM got the trucks with one guy driving a robot arm, it was a DISASTER, what actually happened is the overwhelmed one guy stopped picking up on my neighborhood unless you called to complain & in the end we all had to cancel our WM contracts to sign up with some local dudes who have a truck for hauling our stuff 2x weekly to the dump...
the local dudes are not only more reliable (no one would use them if they weren't) but cheaper despite the dump fees!

@futurebird @billiglarper I find the way that the mission text on the side gradually turns into a threat a little strange. I'm used to things like that being more along the lines of "Emptying your bins!" in a jolly handwriting font.

@futurebird I'm old enough to remember when bin gangs consisted of a driver and four guys to collect, carry, empty into lorry and return the bins to the house. I wonder how he'd react if he were spirited back to those day

@futurebird the same people complain about unsanitary conditions (like rats) or traffic being held up by garbage trucks.
