@EUCommission Cool story. Now do the Palestinians … remind me what happened to those sanctions you proposed against Israel a couple months ago?

      Ukraine’s fight is our fight.

Tonight, the colours of Ukraine on our headquarters stand as a reminder of the courage and resilience of its people, and the enduring pain of a war that continues, after four years.

Not just as a symbol of solidarity, but as a tribute to those who have lost their lives, and a call to redouble our efforts towards a just and lasting peace.

Europe's shared values, strength, and commitment will never waver.

@EUCommission What a joke, after you let the fascist Orban lick Putins feet again.

@m1rk0 @EUCommission What do you mean 'let'? Sadly our laws allow very little room to stop Orban. And changing them generally requires unanimity.

I'd like to understand more concretely what you think the EU should do against fascists like Orban? Even suspending Hungary would require unanimity among the rest, which other fascists like Slovakia's Fico will not support.

@azathoth @carquint @EUCommission There simply isn't much legal room for action against Hungary while others like Fico in Slovakia, and to a lesser extent Meloni in Italy protect Hungary.

The only real options require unanimity among the rest of the EU governments. The EC has very little recourse itself under EU laws. Which in turn can also only be changed with unanimity among the national governments.

@Schouten_B @EUCommission They don't even try to do the exact thing you described. Or condemn him publicly, which they are allowed to. It makes the EU look weak and their actions implausible. As a German i am ashamed of the EU president on a daily basis.

@m1rk0 @EUCommission I understand where you are coming from. I also understand the EC.

While it looks great in the (social) media, condemnations have a couple of important downsides. First they have no legal power, so they still need Organ's cooperation to get other things done for Ukraine in other areas. And second they tend to strengthen Orban's domestic position, in a time where we're hoping Fidesz might be unseated in the coming elections.

@m1rk0 @EUCommission It's pretty obvious from what leaked and open mic moments and such that there's no love lost between the EC/Von der Leyen and Orban. However they have to play the political game and get as much done as they can.

While you and I can do all the performative screaming we want about how terrible Orban is, I'm happy the EC focuses on getting the most out of what's legally possibly forgoing performative expression that would come at the cost of effectiveness.

@EUCommission No. It’s not our fight. It’s none of our business. Ukraine is not even in the EU.

Put sanctions on Russia or hold peace talks. Putin said several times he wants peace but Ukraine doesn’t.

But don’t be spending our tax money on weapons for Ukraine. Don’t send our troops there. Let them sort it out themselves.
