I CANNOT BELIEVE I HAVE TO SAY THIS:

the purpose of a voter identification card is not only to suppress the vote, but to TRACK the vote.

voter id laws in the United States have ALWAYS come down to fascists wanting to know who is voting AND FOR WHOM, so they can suppress those votes.

the SAVE Act is not only a voter suppression law, but it’s #MAGA #fascists wanting to codify that Americans do not have a right to a secret vote ―which is a HUMAN RIGHTS VIOLATION

@blogdiva I can't believe you have to say it either. Alcohol consumption and gun ownership really *aren't* the same things as something every citizen has a Constitutional right to do.

@blogdiva I don't live in the US so I am not in the position to agree or disagree with your statement.
however in Australia we are registered to vote. We tick off our name, grab a bit of paper. The paper is placed into a sealed cardboard box with every other person's vote. There is no ID on the paper. So it is fairly easy to have a verified voter without being able to track the vote.

Can you please educate me as to why voter identification is so problematic in the US?

@Timberwolf @blogdiva Same here, I voted in Slovenia and France and an ID was always required and a signature on a list was mandatory (you have an assigned location to vote). After that since the bulletin is anonymous there is no way your vote can be tracked.

          @kingmoth @Timberwolf @blogdiva
Many US states require a voter to register under a party to allow them to participate in that party's primaries so you wind up with a database of individuals associated with their political preferences.
And having ID to vote is one thing but it's often the kind of ID that get accepted that can make the difference. Like states that allow a concealed weapons permit as voting ID but not a college ID.
Even further, it's pretty common before big elections for Republicans to run a bunch of bills to reduce the number of eligible voters in specific elections, voters that they can pretend to select for arbitrary reasons, but that were actually well calculated from the registration data to have specific and meaningful effects on the election results

@Timberwolf @blogdiva I'm US Citizen and am also confused by the statement. I've had a voter ID card for decades.

What's going on in the US though isn't that. They're trying to make it so you have to bring proof of citizenship that matches birth certificate. That's hugely problematic for most citizens with a very targeted exception group: well off, white men. I was able to lay down $200 and get mine in a couple weeks and nobody ever asked me to change my name my entire life.

@blogdiva in Poland I have to show my ID to get the voting card, but after that they have no way to see how I (specifically) voted. Cards are the same.

THERE ARE NUMEROUS VOTING REQUIREMENTS IN #USA

                1. THERE IS NOT A FEDERAL ELECTIONS AGENCY
each state manages elections based on constitutional statutes and voting rights laws

                2. it means every eligible voter needs to prove two things:

2a. USA CITIZENSHIP - to vote in federal elections
2b. STATE RESIDENCY - to vote in statewide & local elections

                      @blogdiva

Every time I've seen a discussion by information security people about voting systems, the conclusion has been:

If you want both "one person one vote" and "anonymous voting" then there is no pure computer system that can actually give you that with proper auditability.

Paper ballots that are counted digitally are great because you have a hard to tamper with artifact (it's a lot harder to forge a bunch of paper ballots and put them in then to hack a database) for recounts/audits.

@blogdiva In the UK paper ballots *are* identifiable. But only for a short period of time with a court order, which essentially never happens.

(The scenario is that you turn up to vote, and get told that you can't vote because you've already voted. If your one vote would have made a difference to the result the stolen ballot can, in theory, be retrieved and examined.)

THE VOTING RIGHTS ACT wasn’t written just with African Americans in mind. what was passed in 1965 had to keep being amended and expanded.

that’s why demanding special paperwork, like original birth certificates only to vote were deemed anti-constitutional and a burden akin to a poll tax.

our states of residency already have ways to verify who we are. there is no need to burden voters, especially NATURALIZED CITIZENS… 🧵

naturalized citizens already have to jump through hoops, sometimes for decades, to prove they are worthy of USA citizenship. demanding original birth certificates ONLY TO VOTE has been proven to be a poll tax.

                                #VotingRightsAct #USpol

@blogdiva I just love how long the list of shit that if I did as a private citizen would make me a convicted felon but that they allegedly can just do with zero issues is

FASCISTS MAKE IT ALMOST IMPOSSIBLE FOR WORKING CLASS MIGRANTS TO GET #USA CITIZENSHIP

naturalized citizens already have to jump through hoops, sometimes for decades, to prove they are worthy of USA citizenship. demanding original birth certificates ONLY TO VOTE has been proven to be a poll tax.

this is why the Jewish American community fought and died with us during the Civil Rights Movement: imagine being a Holocaust survivor and denied the vote because you didn't have a birth certificate… 🧵

POLL TAXES ARE THE OF ENSHITTIFICATION OF DEMOCRACY

and fascists will create racist, misogynistic, xenophobic, transphobic, classist, reasons to deny us not just the right to vote, but our civil and human rights.

you can't “model minority” your way out of fascism. you have to fight it by all means necessary.

that’s why in spite of fascist SCOTUS John Roberts, Black Voters do Matter: the antifascist gains of the 1960s protected all of us. without them everybody loses the right to vote. /🧵

                                    PS:

i edited a post above that mentioned how #MAGA #Republicans want to get of citizenship by birth, but didn’t expand on that.

the TL;DW: republicans want to get rid of citizenship for all working class people. used to be the oligarchy were mostly landowners and that’s who they wanted as voters. it’s now only the #EpsteinClass they want as voters:

                                    1. during Trump’s 1st coup, they circulated a DoD memo trying to revoke birthright citizenship to children of USArmy personnel born in bases… 🧵

                                      2. they also floated a memo trying to revoke the citizenship of Puerto Ricans born in the island ―an endeavor they haven’t given up since 1898

                                      3. for decades Republicans wanted to set a price for citizenship. the Democrats’ compromise was an "investor" program with a minimum of $2.5 million. this is where Trump’s $1MM citizenship comes from.

                                      4. Project2025 wants to roll back citizenship rights from naturalized working class people first, before they do so to all, no matter their race. /🧵

What’s the rush? Hand counting is harder to hack.
But if you must use digital counters, you need to hand count 10% of the precincts selected by die roll on election night or kiss the whole thing off. The counters will eventually be hacked. They didn’t steal those voting systems for a lark.
