@Blort am already queer and a furry and a witch 😛

Not vegan and no plans to be given health issues (not open for debate). But we do eat plant based quite often!

@hermannus 42C and higher and a medical condition that responds poorly to heat would disagree.

@MsHearthWitch @hermannus e-bike is nice for both heat and cold fwiw.

Heat feels more obvious, maybe, just don't need to work so hard, so tend to sweat less, but still get the benefit of the breeze.

For cold, not having to think about what happens if you bundle up too much but then have to work hard and get sweaty is nice actually. Just dress warm is far simpler than having to have warm but breathable, or sheddable layers or whatever.

@Jaypee niiiice! What I really want is a basket up front at least where my 14yo cocker spaniel can get harnessed in to ride along.

It May not be clear but there is a front rack. You can strap a milk carton or a basket.

You can also simply hang a big backpack that will come to rest on it, I do that sometimes when my passenger is sick of seeing my backpack in their face, all the time.

          The options are limitless.

This thing has a weight capacity of 400 pounds. And I can pull a trailer with 100 lbs.
          YMMV. 😉

I was looking for something versatile. It's a big and plentiful market. Sold and serviced in Canada

@MsHearthWitch For me, it’s been many, many book recommendations.

Also, many, many open browser tabs…. (Is there a term like tsundoku for browser tabs?)

              Hmm: how about “tabigatory”, tab-purgitory

@colinstu @IceWolf Yeah I see the appeal of electro BUT one of the reasons I am thinking about it is for the fitness aspect. I don't currently see myself doing very long treks. Just little pop rounds to local cafes or parks.

between “acoustic bikes” and “e-bikes” there are pedal-assists. Swytch will sell you a bike wheel with an electric motor. The motor only runs when you pedal. Great for uphill on a hot day.

@MsHearthWitch I can't speak for you, but I started biking everywhere about 10 years ago. My stamina is still crap, I'm still overweight, but I can get anywhere I want in a reasonable time and have fun doing so.
Especially in the city I live in, biking is much faster than going by car. Trams run frequently enough, but a bike is still even more flexible.
All of that is work, shopping, meeting people, but I used to even go on longer rides for fun. I only stopped because my kids eat up all the free time I have and going for a 2h bike ride by myself in the middle of the day is out of the question. 😅
Give it a try. You'll be surprised at how fun it can be. 🙂

@MsHearthWitch sorry I saw the responses too late. I don't have any good tips on biking in hot weather either. 😩
I'll be honest, I often just take the tram or walk... or stay at home when the weather doesn't suit me. A light drizzle or snow are okay, but I don't need to be on a bike in 40°C, torrential rain, hail or a lightning storm. 😅
It's perfectly fine to do the things you like given the conditions you like / can handle.

@irgndsondepp Thank you! This is very encouraging, and yeah I live kind of between two cities so any major trips would require the car. BUT there are shops including a decent grocery store and many restaurants and cafes and parks in very very easy biking distance. Including a library that I cannot walk to given my current body but could bike to!

I've decided any and all future art sale profits are going towards my bike purchase fund.

Then do what I do. Only cycle if the weather is to your liking. I don't mind a bit(!) of rain but if it's too much the bike stays home. Cold is not a real problem, biking warms you up. Snow and ice are no go for me. Heat depends a lot on humidity. It's not all or nothing.

And I don't own any special cycling gear, I hate the look of "outdoor clothing" and refuse to be seen in anything neon.

@hermannus 42C and higher and a medical condition that responds poorly to heat would disagree.

@airikr @hermannus Yeah, I wasn't kidding when I said I struggle with The Weather. The last few summers have been blindingly hot WITH 90% and higher humidity for days on end. I can barely function in my house with AC, I cannot imagine biking.

@MsHearthWitch @airikr @hermannus I've got plans to make some chill packs (sodium sulfate + sodium chloride - imagine an ice pack stuck at 65F) specifically to try and get around the wild heat and humidity of the last few years. I've lived in several subtropical cities before, but didn't expect we'd have this weather where I live now, at least not so soon. If they're successful, I'll be using them indoors as well to reduce AC draw.

                                          Mastodon, you are a influence...

Since I joined I have ditched most subscription stuff like Spotify, Amazon and Netflix.

                                          Made the swap to Linux.

                                          Started painting.

Now I am considering whether or not I could be a Person Who Bikes Places.

@MsHearthWitch@wandering.shop Bikes are great (if you’re able to ofc)

biking places is a cool thing and it’s a cool thing that requires:
                                          1) bike
screw anyone who gatekeeps this stuff
