Since I got laid off from my Human-Centered Design job due to our government contract getting DOGE'd I've had lots of people say, "You're in tech, you should get a job in AI."

Politely nodding has turned out to be easier than getting into how "Big AI" isn't fucking hiring my skillset, IF I wanted to be associated with it (which I don't), most "AI" jobs (amid all the scam ghost jobs) are dead-end AI training bullshit, the AI certificates are scams, they're torching the middle class, etc etc etc

I don't think people want to hear the truth, which is that the work I was doing isn't perceived as valuable by Monied Powers because they've realized that circlejerking the same trillions of bucks around is a lot easier than making anything or improving the world, and the better investment is locking us all out (or locking us up) so they can do whatever the fuck they please and no one can stop them.

People really want there to be an easy answer, like The Great Displacement is going to be solved by a few semesters of trade school, rather than the real Dust Bowl vibes that are starting to kick in. Whole generations are being lost without a dignified profession.

For myself, I feel scrappy and hopeful, because I have a lot going for me. Pretty sure I'll be OK. But a lot of people won't, and it's not from a lack of resourcefulness -- it's a lack of resources. Resources that are being actively, deliberately withheld from regular people. Not by any single individual or policy, but by a system that's designed to extract everything it can turning against us.

In the end, the narrative will never be "AI got too smart and destroyed us". History is written by the victors. The story can go two ways: We were stupid and powerless, or we rose up and fixed this.

@xiann Reminds me of how the English word for what happened in Ireland was "famine" but what actually happened was "rich colonists crushed the Irish land-area so only potatoes could yield enough to survive, then made them homeless and exported the other foods when the crop failed".

The Irish word is "Gorta Mór" - approx. "great ungenerousity". We could see what was happening.

But the history books recorded it as the ruling class framed it: overpopulation, foolishness, unfortunate.

@seachaint 💯💯💯 And now we're watching it in realtime. How much poverty and famine has ever been the result of foolishness or happenstance, and now much has been colonizers extracting away people's natural resilience?
