@mpirnat Huh, while I was expecting an acquihire at some point, I wasn't expecting *that* acquirer.

@mpirnat Oh man. The only bright point for me is it's a clear answer to the question, what's going to happen to Astral.
I was really hoping their private package hosting work was going to work for funding the open tools.

@ehmatthes @mpirnat It also answers the "How will Astral make money?" question that's been thrown around. Both major LLM providers have billions coming in from Claude Code and Codex, which is basically shaping up to be developer tools.
With Bun joining Anthropic last year, I am only surprised it didn't happen sooner. https://bun.com/blog/bun-joins-anthropic

@mpirnat Well, have fun with all of that! (waves arms around in all directions).

@mpirnat Although, when the bubble bursts, they might still end up where I would have predicted, just with extra steps.

@mpirnat wish it were Anthropic had it come down to the two. The most salient ick from my POV is that this comes after OpenAI's opportunistic Pentagon nonsense.

@webology @ehmatthes @mpirnat Feels a bit like we are going to see a lot of buying open-source focused companies to control the ecosystem as much as they can.
From a sort of capitalist-zoological perspective, I'm surprised it's taken this long.

@deadwisdom @webology @ehmatthes Mayyyyyybe this will translate into increased financial support for the community, our events, the PSF…?
(Insert cynical laughter and/or Padme-and-Anakin meme here)

@mpirnat @deadwisdom @ehmatthes One would hope.
Sadly, the foundations shoot themselves in the foot when it comes to funding. I fought that fight for five years on the board, and it fell on deaf ears. I'm not in the mood to expand on that again, but funding for things like PyPI was always an easy sell to businesses, but it was an uphill fight to do anything that would increase funding or donations.
