Another really nice creative project this weekend that I should share.
At @voedselboskabouters there was a rabbit problem: these cute little animals are mutilating our freshly planted saplings.
One smart member decided that it was more of a predator problem: us having too little predators…
Then a detailed plan was concocted: we would create habitat for a specific kind of owl: Asio otus. Odly specific, for some unclear reason (1/n)

The solution was researched in detail by a team spearheaded by our engineer in residence. Turns out the long eared owl is known to breed in particular kind of nests, which can be constructed using willow branches.
These basket nests are sold online, but buying shit online is a cop out.
I happen to know a local craftsman that can weave baskets, and we have a lot of willow growing locally so I asked them to help. They did.
Then the local monkey (moi) was tasked to put them in position (2/n)

For the first nest, the attachment system was a bit involved and relying on attachment points that the tree was not kind enough to provide in convenient positions, so the monkey got tired early and had to come back to the engineer.
Of course the engineer developed a perfect hanging system made out of donated oak wood that was left over from the picnic table.
The second climb was more successful and now we have the baskets hanging in three different positions around the perimeters (3/n)

I really love me some overengineered dogoodery hobbies.
Check the @voedselboskabouters account for some more pictures if you like that.
