Status update:

So somebody has siphoned around $20,000 out of my dad's bank account using his debit card number, which he never actually uses.
Which necessitated an in-person trip to Wells Fargo only to be told they don't do that in person anymore.
(We were told before we had to do it that way.)
So anyway, that card has been terminated and not replaced because Visa will just hand the new card number to the scammer. And a shit load of charges have been disputed for a hopeful refund.
But.
GODDAMMIT.

@gwynnion shit, that is bad. I am trying to teach my stepsons how important it is to review the charges on their debit cards, but they think that is annoying, so I am afraid they only will learn when something like this happens . Hope this resolves quickly and in favor of your dad!

FYI: Visa (and I believe Mastercard) has what they call the Visa Account Updater service which proactively gives vendors your new credit / debit card information if you cancel or change cards, which is like god's gift to fucking scammers.

It's supposed to be to prevent a subscription or recurring payment from lapsing due to changing card numbers, which is not a thing anybody wants, cares about, or couldn't address themselves, but if someone has your personal information and previous card number, it basically means you can't get rid of them without killing the card or account permanently because nobody actually does security anymore.

Given the number of hoops I had to jump through today to deal with my dad's account, you would think the system would flag multiple charges to the same vendor for hundreds of thousands of dollars EVERY FUCKING DAY as some kind of suspicious activity.
I've had my debit card frozen until I verified with my bank that I actually shop at Walmart for fuck's sake.
