    I know that a lot of programmers are having a hard time finding work, and it is a shitty time to ask, but I just heard a rather concerning rumor... So...

    If any of you happen to know of an opening for a programmer with a lot of experience with C, golang, and many other languages, with a lot of knowledge about cryptography and Internet standards, that pays well and is either in Portland or happy with remote work...

        @minego I know C/C++ really well, not much on crypto though.

            @sgtstretch Thanks. I hope I don't end up needing something, but I'm getting worried.

              @minego My current employer is mostly-to-all remote for software positions and has a reasonably local office for Portland, OR. (I live in Portland and worked mostly in-office prior to COVID but have been 100% remote since early 2020.) Some caveats: very big company, definitely feels corporate at times, and attitudes towards generative “AI” vary a lot from team to team, so if that’s a factor in your decision, judge listings appropriately. https://jobs.siemens.com/en_US/externaljobs/SearchJobs/Software%20?42386=%5B812209%5D&42386_format=17546&42387=%5B814830%5D&42387_format=17547&listFilterMode=1&folderRecordsPerPage=6&

                @dpnash Thank you!

                My current employer is VERY large, and has been pushing ai on is harder and harder lately. It seems clear that if I stay where I am (assuming I can...) then I'll have no choice but to use ai heavily going forward.

                It feels like every employer is either already doing that or planning to.

                I'd love to find a small company, but that feels unlikely at the moment.

                  @minego Yeah, small is unlikely at the moment. The one generally good thing I will say about where I am now is they aren’t a US company (the division I’m in technically is, but Company HQ is very famously German), and their primary business is building physical things that can’t (legally, ethically, or by social custom) be “vibe built”. I think this has somewhat blunted the “ALL AI ALL THE TIME” approach in US technology companies and culture.

                    @minego I'd suggest you look into the FreeBSD Foundation; they have a track record of funding good contributions to their C codebase:

                    Link Preview Image
                    Various Contracts (Full and Part Time) | FreeBSD Foundation

                    The FreeBSD Foundation continually seeks proposals for work relating to any of the major subsystems or infrastructure within the FreeBSD operating system. A non-exhaustive list of proposal topics that we are interested in funding includes: Jails: Usability/Orchestration/OCI-compatibility Bhyve hypervisor kernel improvements Hardware support on new ARM and RISC-V devices Desktop usability Installer Networking Packaging including

                    favicon

                    FreeBSD Foundation | A non-profit organization dedicated to supporting and building the FreeBSD Project (freebsdfoundation.org)

                    Good luck!

                          @minego Try https://redhat.wd5.myworkdayjobs.com/en-US/jobs/job/Raleigh/Senior-Product-Security-Engineer_R-053025-1 and https://redhat.wd5.myworkdayjobs.com/en-US/jobs/job/Raleigh/Principal-Software-Engineer_R-053026-1, and I believe we'll be opening a position around smart cards soon-ish, too. I know they say hybrid not remote, just apply anyway — if we can't find anybody locally (which is probably likely for cryptography people), they'll consider remote.
