        @josh @Binder Debian. If you’re teaching them to learn, teach them starting from the root of the skills tree.

          @josh

          Between in-terminal ads and Snap, no one should be recommending Ubuntu. Instead, Debian should be in that conversation.

            @josh Most important in what sense? Job experience? Ability to tinker/learn? Ability to just drop it on a system and use it without messing around?

                        @josh - “Just use it”: Bazzite for gaming, Linux Mint for normal basic use.
                        - “Tinker / learn”: NixOS, Arch
                        - “Job experience”: Debian, Fedora, Ubuntu

                              @josh What major?

                              In STEM, I'd argue the only correct answer is #arch/#gentoo/#nix, because you really want them to understand how the system actually works.

                              Outside of that bracket, I'd prefer #Mint (Debian Edition) or #pop_OS, because they are not tainted like #Ubuntu.

                              But then again if the idea is to have a conversation about alternatives *at all*, then #Ubuntu is probably fine 🤷‍♂️

                                @josh@fediscience.org both Ubuntu or Fedora are gonna be good. Their usually quite user friendly
