    @ai6yr @unlambda @sundogplanets

    Edit: turns out it was AI, I messed up. Fooled and foolish. Sorry about that.

    it is not slop! You make something of yourself when you assume.

    I can see why you may have thought it was, but it is a stock photo put through a filter. I would not use AI for a post like this for reasons obvious.

Sorry about that. nope, processed stock photography, the scissors are occluded in the original, this is a filter on a stock photo. I found it as part of the Brown Black and White Modern Labor Day Instagram Post template on Canva. It is not AI:

    @davidaugust @ai6yr @unlambda That is probably the thing I hate the most about the prevalence of slop AI images. They make me doubt EVERYTHING.

    Thank you for this!

      @sundogplanets @davidaugust @unlambda I suspect the "filter" you used is actually AI, as well. Which is typical nowadays. It's been asked to redraw the original image in a different style, and it's not "filtering", it's AI slopping it.

        @liquor_american @davidaugust @trevorparker Filter is definitely AI redraw, it's slopping the original image, sadly. 😞 And end user would not know this without careful inspection. Just out of curiosity, which filter is it?

          @liquor_american @sundogplanets @davidaugust @unlambda Yeah, looking at the original vs. the "filtered", it's sloppified. Unfortunate, and I know David did not do it deliberately... So easy for this to happen nowadays.

            I am sure. The lighting on the stock image lends to the geometry of the scissors becoming less distinct without much manipulation.

            The filter is a simple "etching" filter. The source image set ups the reality of the spacial reality of the scissors becoming vague and unclear/artificial seeming.

              Specialized, but they're a thing. They work like spring-loaded so they return to "open" on their own after you squeezed them.

              IIRC I've seen this type (just bigger) being used for shearing sheep.
              E.g. here: https://www.scharfewolle.de/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/anleitung-schafschur-handschere.pdf

                    it is not sloppified. I did not do so. Period.

                    It is an anomaly of the universe that human vision and cameras can easily encounter reality that does not seem real.

                    It is almost a visual version of a Tiffany-like problem: real does not always seem real ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tiffany_problem ).

                              @davidaugust @liquor_american @ai6yr @trevorparker How do you think style matching filters work?

                              They are generative AI.

                                  Yeah, the whole company is a generative AI company. Sorry. That's their selling point and base technology.

                                  @ai6yr @liquor_american @trevorparker

                                  it didn't used to be....they had been a fairly traditional graphics package and I, obviously, engagingly and embarrassingly, didn't realize how deeply in their interface the AI had gone. My foolishness.

                                  This is gonna hang on me for a while. God F-ing damn it.

                                  So humiliating. Now to purge the drivel I foolishly spewed.

                                    @sundogplanets @davidaugust @unlambda I suspect the "filter" you used is actually AI, as well. Which is typical nowadays. It's been asked to redraw the original image in a different style, and it's not "filtering", it's AI slopping it.

                                      edit: messed up and replaced image with a fixed image. I stumbled, foolishly, into using an AI filter I thought, foolishly, was a traditional style image filter.

                                          It's not just Canva. I do work for a bunch of different companies and there's a ton of AI shit built into their systems now. I just ripped one out that used a google document AI tool to get the text out of a PDF. I replaced it with a simple script. I admit, I then left the AI summary crap there, but at least 99% of the AI work was removed.

                                          It's everywhere. Hard Coded in.

                                          I try to keep it extremely limited, warning them that this shit is going to be 100x more expensive the moment a "winner" is picked from all these AI companies, but they love getting results ASAP..... even if they're wrong. 🤷
