    Apparently this was weather related--dust storm/brownout. I am not sure how you avoid this, except stay off the roads. (that said, having driven I-40 through NM, CB channel 19 might be helpful for hearing about conditions like this before entering an area... pull off the freeway and wait for better conditions instead of pushing through, live to see another day, I guess).

      @ai6yr Jesus. Growing up in AZ, we ALWAYS were told to pull off the road as far as we could & shut off the car/take your foot off the brake pedal. I've done that at least twice as a driver - once on I-40 & once I-10 near Lordsburg, NM. As a kid I can remember my stepdad doing that near Yuma (I-8, I think) & when we emerged post-haboob, there were multiple wrecks around us. Scary situation.

        @ai6yr yep! When I travel cross-country I have my CB on channel 19. Let the truckers be your lookout.

          @Nshrubs @ai6yr

          That's exactly right. You turn off the vehicle to avoid sucking dust into the motor, which could kill it. Also, turn on your flashers.
