"Science" always played this role in the liberal vision of society: as a confirmation tool and support for authoritarianism, not an exploration and discovery tool in search of reality.
The severing of "data-based decisionmaking" from actual, plausible data gathering was guaranteed from the moment neofascists replaced paleofascism's "disbelieve your eyes and ears" with "data is God; here's the data".
