Mike Collins, a congressman from Georgia, wants to take away commercial driver’s licenses from noncitizens.

Over the past 25 years, truckers for his businesses have been involved in crashes that killed five people and injured more than 50 people.

@ProPublica Sounds like he's suggesting we replace road-destroying trucks with trains.

One of those incredibly loooooooooong freight trains, because profit maximising is the one priority trumping EVERYTHING.

First we need to set an upper boundary on train lengths.

But long trains are the best, especially when your house is on one side of the tracks and the local hospital or school or your workplace is on the other.

@ProPublica The whole industry is in a horrendous state. My info may be a few years out of date, but the turnover in truckers is enormous--it even exceeded 100% at one point (lots of retirements, etc. that weren't offset by new drivers.)

About half of truckers on the road have less than one year experience. That should change your expectations of driving near semis!

Many new drivers receive negative paychecks, since the cost of the their shiny new rig outweighs what they earn through driving.

@wonka @ProPublica Lemme translate from US Fascist to Normal Human Language: they feel that it's impolite to say straight up bigoted things like "immigrants are the cause of all problems in America". So they think it's much more palatable to say stupider shit like "one has to be a citizen to be able to "read" traffic signs".

It's similar to when someone's dumping their bf/gf because they're overweight, but since it would look shallow, they say it's because of their busy online gaming schedule

@pomegranate_stew @antipode77 @ProPublica This is so car-pilled. There are solutions for getting past train tracks; don't build level crossings!

It’s small town Midwest US life. My hometown, around 5000 people, has tracks directly through the center that have been there for over 100 years. They don’t have the money to even build pedestrian bridges over the tracks.

@pomegranate_stew @antipode77 @ProPublica Your town got hosed. It had a direct rail line and still only has 5000 people in it? Sounds like it got gutted by the interstates. Remember that; cars ruin cities. Asphalt is expensive to maintain, has terrible drainage issues and is destroyed by heavy trucks that could have been delivered literally straight to your town via rail.

It was incorporated in the 1870s. It’s a small town in the Midwest, just like thousands of other small towns which also have railroad tracks through them. Believe me, no one there would consider themselves “hosed”. They enjoy living in a small town. I don’t, which is why I don’t live there.
