I loved the first Idlewild record.

I loved the first Idlewild record. It was like a Scottish interpretation of Husker Du or Rites of Spring’s melodic punk. Their later refinements into soft-rock/folk were great, but never worked for me in the same way.

I’m reminded of a famous review of this record that described it as sounding like “a flight of stairs falling down a flight of stairs”.
I only saw them live once while they were in the middle of their exploration of traditional Scottish folk music, which was great, but not the Idlewild I had loved. -
