F-Droid and the path to digital freedom in 2026.

Most commercial Android devices come with Google Mobile Services deeply integrated—collecting telemetry, controlling core functions through closed APIs. The foundation of independence begins with LineageOS, a custom ROM with zero Google services baked in.

On top of this, F-Droid offers a repository of free and open-source software where every line of code is publicly verifiable. No accounts. No tracking. Apps built from source by volunteers. "Anti-features" like trackers are clearly flagged.

The tradeoff: convenience. Banking apps may need workarounds. YouTube becomes NewPipe. Google Maps becomes OsmAnd+. But for journalists, activists, and privacy-conscious users, this is the only real choice.

The ecosystem runs on donations and direct developer support through LiberaPay, Bitcoin, Patreon. No selling user data. No corporate surveillance.

Freedom isn't free. But it's a choice worth making.
