        @rbreich

        >Le secret des grandes fortunes sans cause apparente est un crime oublié, parce qu’il a été proprement fait.
        > Honoré de Balzac, 1834

        (The secret of great fortunes is a crime forgotten, particularly if done well. Or something to that effect.)

          @rbreich - "There are only three ways to make money: you're either born with it, you marry it, or you steal it."
          -- Sicilian proverb apparently

            @rbreich ... and occasionally PowerBall. I always find it amusing when I tell someone I paid for 1 quick pick on a billion dollar lottery payout and they call me stupid, I ask them "and why do you call tech billionaires smart?" same game just a different set of numbers to pick.

              @rbreich Here's the counterexample (they made a lot of money but it was kind of accidental):

                @rbreich

                6) Divorce a billionaire.

                Even if you try giving it away, the interest increases faster than you can get rid of it. At least that seems to be the case for the former Mrs. Bezos.

                  @bzdev @rbreich

                  I'd add Valve to the list.

                  "Make quality products your customers like and protect their best interests, as well as your employees".

                  Pretty much requires staying private.

                    @peterjriley2024 @rbreich inheritance works equally well whether imperialism was involved in your parents getting rich or not. Also, monopoly (PayPal) did the heavy lifting for Musk - it usually does.
