When I was a kid, my Mom wasn't much of a cook, and worked most of the time, and my Dad rarely cooked, because Patriarchy, and you didn't really want him to on account of his Grape Jelly and Onion Beans, and Potato Water Soup. Anyway, my Mom would buy 10 loaves of .25 cent Aldi's white bread, a loaf of American Cheese, and a giant container of whatever was the cheapest Peanut Butter and Grape Jelly. Dinner was whatever the cheapest box meal was (off brand Hamburger Helper, off brand Rice a Roni, Augratin Potatoes) was with a pound of hamburger or ground turkey in it, some frozen hamburger patties out of this enormous box she would buy, that was questionably beef, or one of three Soups she would make which were a variety of canned goods dumped into a pot with usually hamburger. You will get the idea that we were poor, and you'd be right. Somewhere around my preteens, I started teaching myself to cook in defense.

What did you all eat growing up?

@RickiTarr Mom did a good job on the day to day stuff. Once she overdid it with salmon cakes, but that was about the only food I complained about. She did very good pork chops with rice and gravy. German potato salad.

Dad loved to cook, liked showing off, and specifically enjoyed doing exotic foods. From his hunting we had fresh frog legs and venison teriyaki. He is the only person I know who made his own Kim Chi. For Thanksgiving, he smoked the turkey and used my grandmother's homemade corn bread dressing recipe. His chili rellenos were also really good.

This was probably part of the reason I have to watch my weight.
