    I usually don't block quickly
But here I realy made an exception.

I sent the person an alt text request with a proposed text. He replied with "no" and a separate post with an explanation as an image

"I'm not prepared to spend ages adding alt text to every post I make. I would be here forever. [...]. I'm genuinely sorry if you have sight problems and I am empathetic to any disability (my daughter is disabled) but this virtue signalling (and quite frankly, bullying) needs to stop.
However, feel free to just block me"

So I took the advice and blocked

He jumps through hoops just to be cruel. He took the time to reply, to write a text, create a screenshot and post it, but doesn't have the time to add provided alt text!?!?! And hides behind his disabled daughter 🤮
I think that is a total asshole move.

Additionally, this is IMHO worrisome and categorical wrong for someone who claims to be a "chief architect"

    E.g.
If there is alt text, people who need it can get the brail output themself. While you can't simply add sign language to your videos, you can simply add alt text

@realn2s hi, there is a lot to unpack here

While I agree that given the chance, we should do our best to ensure everyone is able to partake in the conversation, I also know that this is not feasible for everyone

There are many folks out there who really can’t describe their media

Is it fair to ask them to not post unless they rely on a third party, be it a person or a tool? That’s placing a new burden of verification/ trust on them

And really, despite what they are saying, there are people who might just want to exclude categories of people from their ramblings. That’s ok too, and the rest of us are allowed to ignore them.

        @GuillaumeRossolini
So, lets unpack this some more 🙂

First, I never said that you are not allowed to post images if you don't add alt text. You might not have the spoons, might be on the wrong device, or you might have other reasons you don't even need to explain. And everyone can react to this however they like. Nevertheless, I think it is beneficial to provide alt text, not only for visual impaired people

Second, if you feel to explain why you don't include alt text, time (if it isn't temporary) is probably a bad excuse. Especially if the person who asks provides you with the alt text. Replying to the post takes roughly as much time as adding the alt text.

Third, exaggerating and claiming that including alt text would take ages. Which isn't true, especially if you post screenshots of text.

Fourth, posting this explanation as a screenshot!! You have the time to write text, take a screenshot, create a post, upload the image!? When you simply could have written the text! This is willful cruelty

Fifth, hiding behind the disabled daughter. It similar as to say I can't be sexist because I have da daughter!

Sixthly, jumping to the self-victimisation and accusing others who ask for alt text to be bullying. WTF

This is a person I don't want to interact with. And yes, I see this behaviour as highly dysfunctional if you are working as a software architect. Core skills of which are to discover and address requirements of others as well as to communicate without getting defensive and aggressive.
