My plants were x5 more expensive than commercial veg, I had to water daily (South Australia - driest state, driest continent) -

My star crops are Yam, Turmeric, Mint, Curry Leaves, Amaranth and Black Nightshade(its not poisonous if eaten the right way).
Tomato, carrots, cucumber, beans and a few gourds are on the way.

Tasty and satisfying......but I do not understand how commercial operations are profitable without stealing water.
My plants were x5 more expensive than commercial veg, I had to water daily (South Australia - driest state, driest continent)@n_dimension @Timothyswallehz don't forget discounted fuel (in the UK at least), and government subsidies help too

Sorry for the disappointment but it's a very little problem according to me
Once friend said that every problem has a solution through nature
Through nature I think you can use some insects that do feed with bugs and put them in the garden or using alcohol on your crops to prevent bugs on your garden

My spinach crop was devastated by grasshoppers. I have upped my companion planting to see if that helps (marigold, parsley, rosemary, dill). Will see how that goes but I think my biggest success was manually squishing them whenever I saw them (yeah, eww). Maybe try netting/foliar sprays?

I have upped my companion planting to see if that helps (marigold, parsley, rosemary, dill). Will see how that goes but I think my biggest success was manually squishing them whenever I saw them (yeah, eww). Maybe try netting/foliar sprays?

I haven’t seen the culprits, but I suspect ants, because it’s the season where they fly to make new nests. But, I’ve not seen any sign of them in the beds, so? I’ve got nets, but I was waiting until they were tall enough to stake. Companion plants are my next step. I left the center row empty for those, I just have to research which ones.

Me too during the period of covid ,I had much crops where by some times became dense in my little garden but I never made it commercial but also some times it's needed to make it commercial because of some needs of me some of my friends whom I support financial and economically
The vegetables were also looking good I had put them market and were bought some times
Now how are you able to grow vegetables in a dry state -

Yeah thanks for the kind words,are you living in a swampy area because yams often grow very well in that kind of are
Those kind of crops are need much care and time to care for them

the grass hoppers devasted your spinach because you had not sprayed some organic pesticides on them ,I wish you a good luck in your new plants and I engage you to still plant some spinach in your garden

may be were also ants or caterpillars because in Uganda caterpillars mostly attack our vegetables but we use organic pesticides to control them on the garden
I don't know much about this season where you living but I wish you a good luck in companion plants
