    πŸ†• blog! β€œI'm OK being left behind, thanks!”

    Many years ago, someone tried to get me into cryptocurrencies. "They're the future of money!" they said. I replied saying that I'd rather wait until they were more useful, less volatile, easier to use, and utterly reliable.

    "You don't want to get left behind, do you?" They countered.

    That struck me as a bizarre sentiment.…

        @Edent I've made this exact same argument to a colleague recently!

        And additional one brewing in my head but not formulated yet is "sure, it might benefit you on the short term, but you already acknowledged it has bad externalities, when are you expected to pay them?"

            @Edent The only place I find important to be amongst the early adopters is the buffet table.

              @Edent I completely agree, I guess it's more about the person wanting confirmation that what they've done was a good idea.

              Weirdly I think I did get into crypto early enough. I played around with it as actual money for micro payments on the internet 10 years ago and it was kinda fun. Thankfully got bored before it became whatever it is now. Not that I ever thought people were missing out from not also playing around with it, if it had worked out it would have come to them.

                @Edent lol:

                "There are a 16,000 new lives being born every hour. They're all starting with a fairly blank slate. Are you genuinely saying that they'll all be left behind because they didn't learn your technology in utero?"

                  @Edent AI is full of paradoxes, one of them is that these are all true at the same time:

                  * You have to start using it now, or you will get left behind
                  * It's so simple that anyone can do it, you don't need any prior experience
                  * New in 2026: you can forget everything you did with AI in 2025, it is outdated and of no value anymore, in fact it's detrimental if you don't keep up

                    @Edent a grad student working at my first job said, about Windows 95: β€œHurry up and buy it, before they get all the bugs out!”
                    Wise, and prescient.

                      @Edent I have to confess: would have loved to be an early adopter to bitcoin :-). But the general sentiment of course holds true: one can easily adopt to revolutionary things when everyone else adopts. There'll be a solution for the general public then.

                      Sometimes there's early mover advantage. But all this has risk attached of course. With the danger of beating a dead horse here: Bitcoin went live in 2009. And somewhere in 2013 was the latest point where investing 1k would have made you a millionaire by today. Hindsight's 20/20 and 1k is not nothing but 4 years are also a long time to still count as "early" when it comes to adopting.

                      Anyway imho it's more a matter of taste and how risk adverse you are. I guess it's hard to figure out what "investing 1k into AI" looks like exactly right now :-).
