Shouldn't there be a lot more time traveling incidents where a miscalculation was made and a person poofs into spacetime where the surface of the earth was a few seconds ago?

Shouldn't there be a lot more time traveling incidents where a miscalculation was made and a person poofs into spacetime where the surface of the earth was a few seconds ago? Like, at the planet's orbital speed, a person would be under the mantle or in the stratosphere. Both are tough to survive in just a t-shirt and blue jeans.
