@gwynnion My hometown is modernizing its entire fleet of public transportation. The main route now has regular (7-minute intervals most of the day) 24-meter-long bi-articulated electric buses, and they are *so* great. They don't spew out awful fumes, they're quiet, and they're a lot more comfortable to ride in than the old diesel buses.
E-bikes are *awesome*. I can't ride one myself due to my shitty balance, but seeing how much of the inner-city traffic has switched from cars to e-bikes is great.
(I wish I could still get excited about computers; they've been a huge part of my life. But nowadays they're mostly being put to use as surveillance and control tools.)
@datarama I used to be into computers, made a lot of my own machines, but after a point I just stopped caring. I recently upgraded and my PC is still 10+ years old! LOL. But it does everything I want it to do, so what? I can do half of it on my phone anyway and it's not state of the art either. I don't mind streaming. I just wish it paid musicians better. So as a whole, computers already plateaued as far as I'm concerned.

@datarama I think recent developments in sodium batteries will make a lot of e-stuff cheaper and more efficient. And that's great! Anything that gets us away from fossil fuels.

Yeah, actually. There's been some interesting developments in nuclear power in terms of safety and efficiency. Fusion seems to be creeping closer. We're getting better at figuring out superconducting materials and metamaterials in general. Solar and wind are improving by leaps and bounds. There's a lot of potential to upend our stagnant fossil fuel economy and none of it depends on chatbots.
@gwynnion I am excited about solar Sterling thermal, and planet coolers that absorb in the greenhouse wavelengths, heat pump to an emitter, and radiate in the atmospheric window wavelengths. Constructed with a process as simple as using high-tech paint pigments on roof surfaces and paved areas.

Also new and exciting advances in green energy, like how transparent solar panels are becoming more of a thing! Or the various tools being cheaper to get (3D printers, small lathes etc) that quite literally give more people the means of production -

@gwynnion Or if we want to stick to discussing computing technology... I know several available, even if they don't get the attention they deserve!
For example CRDTs will, if deployed, make our creative apps more usable whilst using less compute! I hear the French have been working on an office suite for the sake of digital sovereignty...
Or outside computing: I like seeing the wide variety electric vehicles (even beyond cars) available, & heat pumps are neat!

@gwynnion I'm pretty excited about the recent progress on vaccines for various awful diseases, not to mention research into treatments for Depression and PTSD.
Also excited still about the potential for genetic engineering technology for things like extirpating disease-bearing mosquitos, or making our agri system more resilient.

@datarama @gwynnion God, e-bikes are so good...I stopped biking altogether for years because of my arthritic hips deteriorating to the point that I couldn't do slopes anymore, tried an ebike out of curiosity and discovered I could bike just fine if I turned up the assistance in the hard parts of the route.
Honestly just an incredible game-changer for me, both in terms of general mobility and exercise. (when it's not winter)
