@codinghorror > In other words, access to AI may soon matter as much as access to a fat salary and juicy equity awards. As a coder in the AI era, if you don't have access to massive compute, you might end up producing far less software than your colleagues, threatening your career prospects.

      What about no?

@codinghorror That only makes sense if you need to use AI privately, more than food and tent (which are not paid in AI credits)

@ubik very unlikely IMO unless your CTRL+C and CTRL+V keys have stopped working. And hell no to company towns and paying in "script" in general. That's extremely dangerous.

@codinghorror Ironic that Silicon Valley CEOs don't understand what Software Engineers do.

@codinghorror @trendsbot I could only read up to paywall notice. At that point it looked like the article was saying candidates for jobs are asking how much compute their teams will get (akin to, “what kind of laptops will I get?“) to decide if they take a job.

Not “tokens are part of your compensation”.

Does it go on to suggest the latter? Tokens for work or personal purposes?

@codinghorror I'm going to be pedantic for a moment.

                                  It's spelled scrip.

But yeah, I absolutely agree. There's a reason it was banned by the Fair Labor Standards Act way back in the day.

And we don't even get interesting trinkets with what they're proposing. Like, old company town scrip is a little bit of an art form, admittedly a terrible one because of what it represented, but it is a part of our history and it's interesting to hold in your hands.
