Nirvana wasn't a grunge band, they were a riot grrl punk band, people just didn't notice because they were dudes.

The sound fits- intentionally "sloppy"/gritty northwestern US punk-

the lyrics fit- they focus on empowerment, sexual assault, racism, classism, patriarchy...

Kurts visual style fits (right down to the thrift store cardigans and dresses)..

Nirvana is a partly gender swapped Bikini Kill.

That's why everyone says "Nirvana's sound came out of nowhere! It didn't sound like anything else at the time!"

No, it did, people just didn't pay attention to a sound associated with loud feminist women until a marketable dude took it up.

(Not denying Kurt was hugely influential and unique, but I am saying he was partly standing on the shoulders of groups like L7, Bratmobile, Babes in Toyland, and women like Kathleen Hanna, Kim Gordon, Kim Deal, etc. He fused the Melvins with what those women were doing. )

-points at Courtney- I MEAN C'MON

(with love from a 90s teenager who also didn't understand at the time why they were so into Kathleen Hanna.)
