Trying not to strawman, but there seems to be a leftist critique of AI as:
- a useless technology
- which is only possible via IP theft
- and yet is displacing work by human artists and writers
Weirdly like Vance's "illegal criminals are stealing low-wage jobs and driving up the cost of houses."

I suppose this is an easier reality to cope with than what I think is actually the case:
- it's a bubble
- but with real productivity gains
- and as with most productivity-enhancing tech, it will cause labor displacement
- and in a just society, we'd cushion displacement and preserve human dignity

@_dm I hear this critique regularly, almost always on Mastodon, but never thought of it as ‘leftist’ before.
Does it really need to be shoehorned into that tired old 18-century political spectrum?
Or is there some background I’m missing?

@marshray Maybe it's just that I see this view a lot on Bluesky, but I have a distinct sense that "AI is bunk" has become left-coded, and "AI is gonna make me rich if I hustle" has become right-coded (along with grind culture, looksmaxxing, etc).
But I'm an old guy and this is just my impression from the Internet, so I could be completely off.

@_dm Oh, Bluesky, say no more. I see what you mean.
I’m wondering where I can find sober discussion of AI usage for coding. If I mention it here I get called names.
HN, maybe.
Any suggestions?
