I don't understand why the recovery of deleted Signal messages is news.

I don't understand why the recovery of deleted Signal messages is news.
If an attacker has full access to the endpoiint, Signal has never claimed to protect messages -- and IIRC, has expressly stated that they do not.
Edit: But hey, at least it is getting the word out that deleting the app doesn't delete the messages!

@krypt3ia Indeed. As the translation layer between tech and gen pop, the journalists are supposed to pick up on this. But there's a lot of headwind. But hey, at least gen pop is getting the word that deleting the app doesn't delete the messages!

@tychotithonus you're referring to the recovering of deleted messages via iOS notifications DB?
FBI Extracts Suspect’s Deleted Signal Messages Saved in iPhone Notification Database
The case was the first time authorities charged people for alleged “Antifa” activities after President Trump designated the umbrella term a terrorist organization.
404 Media (www.404media.co)
This says a lot about Apple and iOS usage.
iOS Notifications (and probably Android's Notification History feature as well) has a dangerous downside to it.

@tychotithonus A microwave. A microwave deletes the messages.
Or a 38. That works ok too.

@Sempf @tychotithonus We used to take the platters from server drives to the outdoor range for destruction. In hindsight, it may not have been the best idea, but it was effective and we needed something to shoot at for training.
