I'm surprised it survived that long. It has about 90 million Russian users. But now they can chat under the watchful eye of a totalitarian government.

"Russian officials are promoting a national messaging platform called Max, a government-backed service modeled on China’s WeChat and developed by the creator of the social network VKontakte."

The Record: Moscow moves to throttle Telegram as Kremlin pushes its own messaging app https://therecord.media/russia-throttles-telegram-pushes-its-own-messaging-app @therecord_media #Telegram

@AAKL @therecord_media Telegram was allowed because it served their purposes. As they need to further control the population, they need an app that does more than allow them to listen in on every conversation.

They want that, and what the Chinese government has: your biometrics, financial transactions, location data, news consumption. E-ve-ry-thing.

      Thus, the WeChat model.

@avuko @therecord_media I agree. It's served its purpose. Besides, the closed, observable internet model is something all of these like-minded countries have been pushing for. But I doubt the Kremlin will leave Telegram alone.
