@Mustardfacial @ra6bit @da_667 @gsuberland @rusty__shackleford some of us are old enough to remember when IBM made their own drives, and they were very much best in class in every way.

@da_667 @rusty__shackleford I am slowly replacing the 6TiB drives with 8TiB since they are barely any difference in price; once those last two originals are gone I'll be able to boop the raidz2 up to 64TiB raw.

I had hoped to do a refresh with 18TiB drives this year, netting myself 288TiB raw, but alas the pricing is obscene.

@da_667 @rusty__shackleford (it's not as pants-on-head batshit offensive as the SSD pricing has become, but it's still enough to sting when you want 16 drives, and anti-scalping measures are making buying 16 drives from anywhere trustworthy very annoying right now)

@da_667 @rootwyrm @ra6bit @gsuberland @rusty__shackleford The first HDD that ever failed on me was a deathstar lmao. This is after having multiple Maxtors, and Seagates that would last YEARS

@Mustardfacial @da_667 @ra6bit @gsuberland @rusty__shackleford look, it's not my fault or theirs that you didn't buy the good shit. All of mine still work just fine. Especially the UltraStars.
I still have some HP-branded IBM made ones too.

@rootwyrm @da_667 @ra6bit @gsuberland @rusty__shackleford I had a choice between buying a set of Ronal Teddy Bears for my Mk.2 Jetta or buying a good HDD. Sacrifices had to be made and those Ronal's are too funny to not buy.

@Mustardfacial @rootwyrm @ra6bit @gsuberland @rusty__shackleford fun fact: I burned all the money I got from high school graduation on my first PC. 1GB of RAM, XP pro, Radeon 9800 pro, AMD athlon 2600+, soundblaster audio card. Most people? "let me pick up a used car." me? nah, fuck that. give me a computer.

@da_667 @Mustardfacial @ra6bit @gsuberland @rusty__shackleford and now y'all are just straight up making me feel ancient. I think I still have my AWE32 around here somewhere. I definitely have a stack of Maxtor drives.

@da_667 @rootwyrm @ra6bit @gsuberland @rusty__shackleford I spent all summer sweeping floors in an auto shop when I was 15 to buy my first PC to play Unreal Tournament and Starsiege Tribes with my friends.

hopefully the anti-scalping will ensure you get drives from wildly different batches -- silver linings
