I don't think people fully appreciate how apocalyptic things are for US science. I haven't received any new funding since 2024, but I'm still ok since grants are typically for 3 years. This means next year I will be completely out of funding and will have to fire everyone in the lab. It's not great.
In my 25-year career, I’ve never NOT had funding. I typically have 4 to 8 grants, which you need if you’re running an observation science program and have a technician, students, and postdocs.
@davidho ALL to pay the #billionaires more money. #TrumpCrimeRegime

time for science to pack up and leave the US permanently

@davidho I decided not to pursue academia after my PhD, and have at times regretted it, but I would likely have been at the end of my second postdoc right now and completely and totally screwed. (If I even made it that far as a researcher)
I started my PhD as Trump's first term started, and I was worried at that time. It is nothing compared to now.

@davidho China does and EU does how about pursuing life research in a more reasonable country

@Powerfromspace1 @davidho you are a bit too much optimistic about funding science in EU.
He talks about 4-8 grants per group... Postdocs (in plural!). Good luck with that here.

@davidho All good points, but note, most of the NSF budget has been restored. The biggest impact of the cuts right now is on staffing levels, which slows down program reviews and introduces considerable delays. Please ask everyone you know who is qualified to volunteer to be an NSF reviewer and volunteer yourself on programs not directly related to your grants. It makes a difference and the NSF staff who are still there need your help!

@crumbletiltskin @davidho Like science did in 1933's Germany

@davidho
Possibly a time to research paths to Europe. Not that it is all rainbows and unicorns in Europe, but certainly more opporyunities for the times ahead -

@davidho I met with a friend today and the grant her lab was aiming for didn't come through. They're working on the next one but she's now down to 60% paid time. By December it will be 0 and she'll be laid off.
The average person doesn't understand the precariousness of the science community's funding situation. I don't know how you all manage to keep doing the science we need right now, this is beyond bad.

Everyone who believes Trump is playing 7D chess really needs to explain what the hell he is trying to do here. The greedy idiot doesn't appear to understand even the basics of investments.

Can you share your source for that graph and/or data? -

@davidho
people elected dozens of other people who simply are not terribly bright and are resentful and derisive of those who are . so they are demolishing education and science like goon High schoolers on a drunken rampage. -

I'm looking forward to the science centre of gravity moving away from the USA - and hopefully past Europe towards the East and South.
@rapsneezy @davidho some European countries made a big deal of setting up money to attract Us scientists, but then cut their overall funding. E.g. France set up a €500 million fund but then cut by €1 billion. I have been very disappointed by their response, the EU could easily take up the slack from USAID cuts too, set up a program with fairer terms and start to make up for colonialism, but no it’s too expensive apparently (it’s not). Oh well China it is then.

Just to be sure: You do know that the EU international aid was significantly more than what the US donated, even before Trump came into office, right? It's not like we are doing nothing.
I can't remember the exact numbers, but it was something like 55/45, with the most aid coming from the EU.

@davidho that is intentional.
- #Fascism is always #antiintellectual and #antiintellectualism is part of #christofascism in particular.
Consider moving your research overseas if possible.
- Many researchers already left the #US for the #EU, and I'm shure you'll likely find someone willing to take a look at your CV at say @DeutscherWetterdienst 's climate research labs ...
- I mean, I refered some radio astronomer from NRAO who's position got cut to get in touch with the MPIfR. Not shure if he's with them now...

@davidho this is one of the reasons BIML is set up as a 501(c)3
