We're trying to resurrect the Keystone XL pipeline and cutting agricultural research is a "necessary evil?"

Has the Carney government lost the plot entirely?

@JEmphatically@mstdn.ca The issue is the cutbacks don’t just postpone and pause research, it abandons decades of work, long established programs with immense value that will never be regained. Agriculture is one of Canada’s super powers, but I guess we can only have one that serves its foreign owners.

@JEmphatically@mstdn.ca Lets burn $500 million to save 5? This is what’s being done.

What’s being abandoned, how much has been invested. No answers

@pinhman It's unbelievably short sighted. Reminds me of the Harper government. What are we even doing!?

@JEmphatically@mstdn.ca Is this just a short term cynical political calculation? Liberals get little support in Prairies? Why put federal dollars into programs that don’t translate into immediate political support?

Meanwhile while rural western Canada faces long term drought issues made worse by climate warming it continues to vote for the party that denies this issue.

And research to address this will be abandoned

@JEmphatically@mstdn.ca And the cutbacks put innovation in the hand of the largely foreign owned highly integrated multinationals that own much of Agriculture. This is only going to cause more severe food inflation and less economic security in Agriculture

Will it be more damaging than Harper undemocraticly closing the wheat pool?
