    @itsfoss

    I have a Fairphone and the biggest gripe I have with it is Android. I still can't believe Fairphone haven't read the room and provided and alternative privacy based option out of the box without having to flash firmware and risk bricking your phone. this is interesting

      yeh I know but that means buying a new phone again. I'm on FP5 and probably won't buy another one cause they have missed the boat for too long on this and not listened to their users who have asked for a privacy based OS out of the box for years

        I've been changing phones only each 6 years, so I might be ready to replace my Fairphone 4 when there's a Fairphone 8.

          Maybe you should have searched a little more when you bought your FP5.
          I have a FP3 running e/os , I bought it with e/os on it. I bought it 5 years ago (running version 1.09 at that time I think) , even before the FP4 existed.
          I bought it directly on the web with e/os, I did not flash anything !!
          It is am now running e/os 3.5 - not a single problem, except a screen an a battery change.
          The company that sold the FP3 to me changed its name and is now murena, but I got a full support all along.

                @itsfoss Yeah, they've been letting people know they were trying to get a manufacturer in on this. Guess they found one.

                The real question is, will they pull a OnePlus crap and suddenly decide profits are more important?

                    @slamr @itsfoss Flashing your phone won't brick it unless you really really REALLY screw up in ways that I just don't even know how you could actually do on accident. In fact, it's kind of hard to do on purpose...

                    I mean, ok, you could "soft brick" in flashing something that doesn't boot, but you just flash again the right way and it's fine.

                    I guess it's possible to lock the bootloader on a phone that doesn't allow unlocking via the recovery but with a bad bootloader installed, but even then you can flash a stock OS with the correct keys and it should boot so you can unlock it again. (Also just don't lock it until you know what you're doing. 🤷 )

                    Yeah, short version is you can't really brick it.

                    BTW Graphene likes locking. They'll come pre-locked.

                      good for you. I had the FP4 before this and found it just slowed down and became annoying to use. granted part of that was down to me however when the camera stopped working completely I gave up on it. I don't want to spend hours rebuilding my phone and fiddling to make it work well but I do want privacy and you couldn't have both....but hopefully times are changing

                                  @slamr @itsfoss 👍

                                  I do agree that it would be nice if things gave us some actual options. We shouldn't have to install third party stuff to get basics. There should be a selection on purchase as to what comes stock. (And no bloatware crap that forces us to have to reinstall anyway.)

                                  But sadly that doesn't exist and Graphene phones won't come with a selection either. If you decide you want, say, Calyx when it comes back (soon?) you'll need to unlock it and flash. If they let you. We'll have to see... (The dev behind Graphene is kind of stubborn about this stuff and I can absolutely see them declaring that unlocking being allowed at all is a security hazard and thus it should not be allowed.)

                                    @slamr @itsfoss 👍

                                      @GOKUSHRM well, from what I understand, they don't have enough secure devices right know, but they will have

                                        I have a Fairphone and the biggest gripe I have with it is Android. I still can't believe Fairphone haven't read the room and provided and alternative privacy based option out of the box without having to flash firmware and risk bricking your phone. this is interesting
