Step2. That cash becomes important to your anual budget
Step3. 2-3 years on, they subtly pass the message about their preferences regarding future projects, road mapping, et al (or else funding "could" be "thought about")
Step4. The coin drops in your brain
Step5. You've been taken over and your current working model is fucked (if not the whole endeavour)

If management not very bright to became fully dependant on one source, then yes, but except Mozilla I can't see other examples like this, so not very likely.
