Rejoice with me! My iPhone 8 that once was bricked is now alive again!
I had long ago forgotten the passcode. I asked at the Apple Store and was told that there was no hope.
So today I found an OS archive with a valid, signed IPSW, downloaded it and restored using the local file. Success!
It STILL demanded the old passcode at one point - but I had set my wife up as recovery contact! (Whew!)
