    So, I'm trying to switch over to #LibreOffice on a Windows 10 operating system, using the Portable version of LO, not the installed version, and my em dashes are not showing up as em dashes. I type, dash dash dash, altogether, and it still does not transform into a proper em dash.

    I tried to fix this with AutoCorrect, but even after I put the, * after it, it sill does not transform.

    Any ideas on how to make the AutoCorrect work?

    I'm also stunned at how much it crashes, Like, no really! Especially when I am editing AutoCorrect entries. It freezes and I am forced to close the program and then recover documents.

    I've also had it crash several times when editing a document---a lengthy blog post.

    Honestly? I hate Microsoft, but it's inhibiting behavior such as this that make me understand why people stick with Microsoft Word.

    I'm not giving up on LO by any means. I will just never badger someone using MS Word again, especially since I've seen how buggy LO is.

    On the bright side, LO is incredibly fast if I am just typing a messy first draft.

      @WeirdWriter I'm a little surprised that the em dashes aren't auto formatting for you.

      When I want them, I type the word I want before it, two dashes and then whatever word I want after and then a space, and then I'm pretty sure it formats it.

      I'll boot up my laptop a sec to check.

        @WeirdWriter
        Tell more about your operating system, and your installation of LibreOffice. I have never had problems with it. I run it on Debian Linux.

          @WeirdWriter Splendors and miseries of open-source. That's why I don't even consider such solutions, I have no time nor forces to investigate how to do a very basic thing or recover my stuff from crashes. And I don't mention their poor accessibility compared to Microsoft or Google.

            @WeirdWriter so, it does an em dash if the words are touching either end of the two dashes.

              @WeirdWriter
              I've been using LO Writer for years. My current version on 26.2.0.3 on Linux is very stable, in fact I've very rarely seen a crash while using it for a few years. You may be finding a way to tickle it that I don't use.

              For M-dash and other non-keyboard characters, I use the Compose key, not auto-correct. Way easier.

                Ah! I think the issue is I am using 3 dashes instead of 2. I will try it when I am home again. Ah thank you! I'll keep playing with it when I get back home again. I am using the portable version, and my hard drive, external, isn't with me. 🙂 @emkingma

                  @WeirdWriter glad to help.

                  My testing has also found though that it won't auto do em dashes with spaces after and before the surrounding words. It does an en dash in those instances.

                  But as I've always worked with style guides where spaces around em dashes aren't used, it's not an issue I've picked up on previously.

                    Yeah. My beta readers sent back track changes, editors too, and with LO it is impossible to make those work smoothly with NVDA. There are ways, but with LO crashing so much, it really isn't worth me missing deadlines or similar. @menelion
