I will say, though, that I don't think it's too soon for you to be building yourself an online presence away from gmail and apple, and that while this advice has mainly been en vogue for non-US folks, I think it actually applies even more urgently for us.

If you were suddenly entirely locked out of google or apple, what would you lose? What other address book do you have for your contacts? Is your two-factor for bills or banking routed in ways that make you desperately dependent?

@jnl I still have a gmail account and I'm a little overwhelmed by starting to think of moving or deleting these emails. (I also have a tutamail account but I haven't moved the important stuff there)

@revndm you don't have to trust other options in terms of making a huge leap right now- but what are you doing to throw yourself some lines or pad out a nest elsewhere as an emergency fallback

I think people misread this advice, like it's a fashion statement or a life orientation. If you are engaged in ANY activism that the US government sees as against its wishes, it's very simply building out a safety net so your entire life doesn't come to a screeching halt if you're capriciously targeted.

@jnl Even if people aren't active (at the moment, under the current definition), all it takes is being the target of one dox (false or not) for digital failure points to go from 'not me' to 'nightmare'. Imho, protecting digital parts of life against single points of failure like 'megacorp says no' should be as basic as having a fire emergency plan.

@feonixrift @jnl Thank you for validating my personal journey with NextCloud (next monster: install Pi-Hole). I'm itching to get out of google mail again. I remember the last time why I came back: it's literally not so easy to communicate with people on the BigCorp platforms, like banks and attorneys, with, for example, a runbox email address.
I've traveled with my phone together with an Apple bluetooth keyboard. Not as good for writing as a laptop, but not all that far off.

Here are some things in your life that might be single-point-of-failure vulnerable, but which probably don't enter into your mental calculus
your back up email on file with your alma mater (one university I attended uses this as 2FA if you need a transcript)
your access to (gag) MyChart for medical stuff
work-related writing, forms, and doc creation that you need to do your job and which for whatever reason exist only on gdocs
kid baby pics and videos that you are trusting icloud to hold for you in the absence of physical storage
access to your banking if 2FA is running through US tech email
etc.
NO NEED to reply here to say how dumb people are and how smart you are. If you have tips, they're welcome.

It's not -- hard drive space is cheap.
Any time you have an option to 'Make file available offline' -- do it.
And, when you buy a computer, you probably don't need the fastest processor available, but you should always go for the most hard drive space you can possibly afford.
(But don't be like me. No one really needs 10 terabytes of storage shoved awkwardly into their desktop computer -- it's just me -- I might have a little data hoarding problem.)

@marsiposa @jnl 99.9% it was flawless. There were a couple of on-line sellers (one was Adafruit, I can't recall the other) that somehow rejected a sale to my runbox address. There was a relative, I think using roadrunner.com, either I couldn't receive their email or they couldn't receive mine. And I think something like that happened with an attorney's office. If I suspected the runbox address, it would have made it easier to deal with.
I use Thunderbird, not the web interfaces.
